Ocean Education

In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught.” (Baba Dioum, 1968.)

Filipino people have limited access to marine environmental education even if our country sits in one of the most biodiverse marine life in the world. We want to invest in the future of the Filipino people through the right of marine environmental education in local communities and create marine-field programs to better appreciate our marine life.

We create ocean bilingual storybooks for local children, translating them into local and international languages, and organize storytelling events in their local communities with our partner youth organizations. We also organize marine camps tailored to the local needs and empowering youth leaders in their Municipalities!

The EmpowerED Siargao: An Educational Coastal Conservation Initiative, in partnership with Forest Foundation Philippines, was implemented in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, Philippines, with the goal of empowering young people in the Siargao Island Protected Landscape and Seascape (SIPLAS) to become leaders and advocates for environmental and coastal conservation. The 5-day marine camp focused on raising awareness about coastal ecosystems, cultivating environmental leadership, and empowering these young leaders to create community-based initiatives.

This initiative included participants from 23 Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) and youth leaders from 9 Municipalities. It includes featuring input sessions from experts on coastal biodiversity, citizen science, and the circular economy, distributing educational workbooks to youth leaders, conducting a coastal clean-up resulting in the collection of significant amounts of waste, and citizen science monitoring.

    Ocean Storytelling Events

    Metro-Manila Beata

Oceanus Conservation and AXA Insurance Philippines conducted a storytelling event for kids about ocean awareness where we garnered 60 pupils from Beata Elementary School! Through AXA Philippines’ sustainability pillar: climate change and biodiversity, they will donate ocean storybooks to our local partner communities. Thank you to AXA Philippines and the teachers from Beata Elementary School who helped us introduce these kids to the actions they can take to continue the movement!

We partnered with the wonderful youth club, Blue Warriors, who went beyond our expectations by organizing a storytelling morning with children based in Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental! Together with Blue Warriors, 27 storybooks of the Ocean Adventures of Cory were donated locally to children living along the coast to help educate and continue spreading coral reef awareness. Currently, our local youth champion and the current SK President, Julienne, has been making waves to spread this storytelling event!

    San Vicente, Palawan

We partnered with a community-based turtle conservation organization, @alimanguansagippawikan, who organized a wonderful storytelling event with children and their parents in Alimanguan Daycare Center. Thank you to all the donors who made this happen! Together with Alimanguan Sagip Pawikan, 15 storybooks of the Ocean Adventures of Cory were donated to the local school in Alimanguan so that they can continue spreading coral reef awareness every year to the children in the daycare center! Coral reefs are also habitats for sea turtles and many more fish, invertebrates, and substrate species. Let’s keep on spreading awareness for the linkage of habitats and biodiversity! 🌏

    Sustainable Ocean Alliance – Malaysia

During World Ocean’s Day, we partnered with  Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) Malaysia – MYOceanHope, Bohol-Siquijor EcoWave Youth Initiatives, and TAYO Youth Organization in Negros Oriental in conducting simultaneous storytelling across Asia!

The team brought 10 local kids aged 11-12 from the local village in Dapa to learn about mangroves. They have never seen mangroves before nor learned about their importance to the environment. We also tried the new underwater drone, which is an in-kind grant from the Wildlife Conservation Society, to show the kids what is below the surface! They were beyond happy and can’t wait to learn about corals too! Thank you to Ms. Aritas from the Union Fisherfolk Association for helping us gather the kids!

Thirty (30) students from St. John Elementary School in Cagayan de Oro City gathered with excitement as student leaders from Xavier University’s Central Student Government Office of the Vice President (XU-CSG OVP) organized a storytelling event and distributed 30 copies of our ocean bilingual storybook! 🪸 Through these stories and activities, the kids have learned about the wonders of the ocean and the importance of protecting it

    News Feature!

“MANILA — Social media darling Scarlet Snow Belo and actress-turned-vlogger Andi Eigenmann are joining in the celebration of World Oceans Day this June 8 through a children’s storytelling session.

The two celebrities have teamed up with the lifestyle brand Grounded for its #OceanLiteracyForAll campaign, which is in partnership with the non-government organization Oceanus Conservation.

They lent their voices to a digital storytelling of “Ocean Adventures with Cory,” a children’s book written by environmental NGO workers Camille Rivera and Aoibheann Gillespie-Mules, and illustrated by Cy Lagamson. The book teaches children how to take care of the underwater ecosystem.”

“While much has been said about the world’s oceans, the threats it is facing, and what can be done to protect it, continuously educating people about it is imperative.

Lifestyle brand Grounded and non-government organization Oceanus Conservation recognizes the need to raise awareness and inspire action to protect the world’s oceans, which is why for this year’s celebration of World Oceans Day, they tapped Scarlet Snow Belo and Andi Eigenmann for an audiobook. It’s part of their current campaign, #OceanLiteracyForAll”
