The Philippines is one of the mega-diverse countries in the world with high species endemism. However, there is a lack of ocean literacy and limited access to marine environmental education in most of the educational institutions around the country.
In 2020, we started an initiative of creating an educational children’s storybook that tackles the lack of awareness of coastal ecosystems, focusing on the importance of coral reefs. Together with the Blue Warriors, a youth club in Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental; Alimanguan Sagip Pawikan, a community-based turtle conservation organization in Palawan; and a local village in Dapa, Siargao, we have successfully donated 52 storybooks of the Ocean Adventures with Cory Volume 1 to local children across the coast in the Philippines. We were also able to spread the beauty of Philippine coral reefs in Iceland with the help of the Reef Warriors!
This year, we are happy to announce that we are finally launching the 2nd book of Ocean Adventures with Cory and it’s all about climate impacts to our oceans. We also added an experiment kids can do to understand ocean acidification. We hope you continuously support us so we can spread the book around the country!
Check it out here and find out how to donate.
Coral reefs are among the most biodiverse and important ecosystems on the planet and the prevalent issue of rising sea surface temperature and changing ocean chemistry greatly affects these coastal ecosystems. Through enhancing education, creating change, acting on our climate, and communicating the effects of climate change on our ocean, together we can reduce these pressures and help these ecosystems recover.
In our own little ways, we can all do something for the planet. Join us as we protect our marine life and support the campaign “30 Percent Protection by 2030”. If you wish to donate and support this ocean literacy project, Link here.
